twice if i like it and more from brandon boyd

Moonlight Arts Collective founder, musician, and multifaceted artist Brandon Boyd wears many hats between fostering a unique platform for multidisciplinary artists, fronting his longtime band Incubus, and maintaining his own art practice.

Within the last year Boyd tackled a number of projects. He collaborated with prog-metal trio Night Verses on the lead single “Glitching Prisms” from the second part of their double album Every Sound Has a Color in the Valley of Night to be released later this month. He participated in a South by Southwest panel on the role of Psychedelics in Music - a topic further explored in an interview with Double Blind Magazine. He also kicked off a 29-date US tour with Incubus last summer which culminated in a headlining gig at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles with Action Bronson and Paris Jackson.

Additionally, Brandon and his bandmates took on the formidable task of re-recording their 2001 double-platinum album, Morning View which led to the release of Morning View XXIII early this year. Initially skeptical of making a new version of something that felt finished and so precious to fans, the band approached the album by allowing the songs to morph and evolve in tandem with the way they’ve played them over the years.

“Life has a way of giving and taking that we can only respond to in kind, but scarcely control. That being said, what started as a daunting task for me as a songwriter and a singer became something of a mission that I came to fall in love with. Being hurled back into that process was challenging but deeply rewarding and I am proud of how this new Morning View feels and sounds!,” Boyd told readers of his substack, A Wink and a Nod where he publishes essays, short stories, and musings.

Twenty-three years after the album’s initial release, the band will perform the record in its entirety with a 10-date tour joined by special guests Coheed and Cambria beginning in Detroit this August and ending in San Francisco on September 12th. In an interview with Rolling Stone last month, Brandon touched on the significance of the album upon its initial release and how it informed his approach to capturing an energy versus simply recording new versions of the songs.

“In my assessment of the re-record, some of my favorite moments on it are these album cuts like “Blood on the Ground” and “Echo” and “Under My Umbrella” and “Aqueous Transmission.” These songs shine a little bit brighter than they did on the original record, in my opinion. I’m excited for people to listen to them,” said Boyd in the interview.

While Incubus ramps up for a busy summer Boyd has also announced his upcoming exhibition with Samuel Lynne Galleries in Dallas, Texas. Things kick off with a reception on Saturday, March 9th with the work to remain on view through the end of the month. This collection blends an intrinsic lyricism with intertwining abstractions layered within Boyd’s fluid linework, drawing in the eye to reveal patterns and intricacies unique to the artist.
